INDIRECT EVAPORATIVE COOLING SYSTEM

In today’s energy-conscious world, Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IDEC) stands out as a sustainable, cost-effective alternative to traditional air conditioning. Designed to deliver efficient cooling without adding moisture, IDEC cooling systems are ideal for hot, dry climates and sensitive environments like data centres, industrial facilities, and commercial buildings.

S Flo provides advanced indirect evaporative cooling technology(IEC) backed by world-class R&D Development centres ensuring significant energy savings and maintaining Excellent indoor air quality. As an energy-saving cooling solution for the GCC region, these systems are a smart choice for businesses aiming to reduce operational costs and their carbon footprint. This makes them one of the most reliable cost-effective alternatives to air conditioning and a strong contributor to sustainability in HVAC design.

How Does Indirect Evaporative Cooling Work?

The indirect evaporative cooling system(IEC) cools outdoor air in two energy-efficient stages without adding moisture, making it ideal for hot and dry climates.

Two stages of Evaporative Cooling

Stage 1: Indirect Evaporative Cooling – Eco-Ice™ Heat Exchanger

Hot outdoor air enters the unit and is split into two streams: primary air and secondary air.

    • The primary air passes through dry channels in the Eco-Ice™ counter-flow heat exchanger.
    • The secondary air flows through wet channels soaked with water.
    • A heat exchange process cools the primary air without transferring moisture.
    • The moist secondary air is exhausted, and the cooled primary air moves to the next stage.

Stage 2: Direct Evaporative Cooling – Eco-Cool™ Pads

The precooled primary air then flows through Eco-Cool™ cellulose pads, where it undergoes direct evaporative cooling.

    • This stage lowers the air temperature through natural evaporation.
    • The result is cool, fresh supply air, ready to be delivered into the building for comfortable indoor conditions—even during peak summer heat.

Together, these two stages enable an indirect evaporative cooler(IEC) to deliver efficient, low-energy cooling with no added humidity, ensuring optimal performance in commercial and industrial air cooling systems.

IDEC Performance in Different Cities of the GCC

Indirect evaporative air conditioning systems are engineered to perform efficiently in the extreme heat of the GCC region, consistently delivering cool, fresh air even during peak summer months.

City Peak Ambient DB (°C) Ambient WB (°C) Supply Air DB (°C)
Doha 46.1 22.3 18.3
Riyadh 46.1 19.9 14.5
Dubai 45.1 23.6 20.2
Jeddah 43.8 23.9 20.9
Kuwait 49.5 21.3 15.8
Muscat 44.9 22.4 18.6
Bahrain 42.0 23.3 20.4

Even when temperatures exceed 45°C, indirect evaporative cooling systems(IEC) for extreme climates can deliver supply air below 20°C—without mechanical refrigeration or added humidity. These systems are also highly effective for outdoor cooling applications in open-air commercial and semi-enclosed environments.

Comfortable Conditions All Year Round with IDEC

Comfortable Conditions All Year Round with IDEC

These IDEC systems are designed to keep indoor spaces cool and comfortable year-round. In most GCC cities, the supply air temperature stays below 26°C for most of the year. In cities like Riyadh and Kuwait, they maintain air consistently under 20°C.

This makes them a reliable fresh air cooling system for large buildings and an ideal evaporative cooling system for the GCC.

Comparing IDEC with DX Packaged Unit Systems

Power Consumption: Up to 65% Energy Savings Cooling System

  • IDEC System: 8.45 kW
  • DX System: 24.14 kW
  • Result: IDEC uses 65% less energy, cutting operational costs.

Higher Cooling Efficiency (COP)

  • IDEC COP: 5.15
  • DX COP: 1.83
  • Result: IDEC is nearly 3x more efficient than DX systems.

Better Comfort and Air Quality

  • IDEC systems use 100% fresh outdoor air, while DX systems often recycle return air. This makes them ideal for applications where ventilation, air quality, and comfort are critical, and aligns well with goals of sustainable air conditioning.
Comparing IDEC with DX Packaged Unit Systems

The indirect evaporative cooler(IEC) clearly outperforms traditional DX (Direct Expansion) air conditioning units—especially in GCC’s harsh climate.
